Raspberry pi and put Kodi
It's just not worth it to keep it running unfortunately with how old it is at this point. I found even 5+ years ago it started struggling with higher quality videos.
Just get a raspberry pi and put Kodi on it (I use LibreElec) for local media. It's orders of magnitude better, and can do 4k.

You can download the latest Kodi v15 version from kodi.tv. If you have an older version of Kodi 14 Helix or XBMC 13 Gotham, you can simply install the new version over the old one. Your settings and media library should be preserved during an upgrade.
